Online and blended learning
The world
goes faster and faster nowadays. My grandparents learned at school only 4 years
– just to be able to read and count. My parents learned at highschool too, but
all lectures were listening and writing to the notebooks. The same my lectures
went because there were only few hard books, while about internet we knew just
little bit. When I started to give lectures to the students – I had one English
book. I learned by myself English, translate parts of the book, made slides and
give to the students, because students were very bad in English. Nowadays there are plenty of information – books
and scientific papers, not necessarily hard copies, but e-approach. Therefore I
understood that there is no need to recited books, rather give only clues for
students and tasks for home works. Especially students they don’t like to sit
and listen, they need actions, practice. I really liked your way to give all
course. As well I liked that duration of the webinar is only ~45 min. Is just
for me – I am not talkative and my lectures usually ending after 50-60 min, while
duration of one of our lecture is 90 min. Another reason for that – many students
works additionally and not always could attend the class. The webinar (with
record at any time) and then consultation will be an option. Like in ONL way.
There no doubt – blended
learning is much better compare to one way lectures. My work field is biology –
ecology. Without lab work I could not imagine our studies. The seminars are
good as well, while older teachers not always want to give them. On other hand
for the good seminar you must put effort to prepare yourself. What I see in my
near future of lecturer – to prepare on-line lessons, worksheets, test and etc.
While next step – on line laboratory works. I have heard that there are such
lessons online, even medics could perform an operation online… but I haven’t
seen. But I believe that it is possible and I will seek this task. It would be
interesting to know – if person learn how to preparate any organisms online,
does he/she will be able to do this alive? Maybe first learn online, than
practice alive? I gues in very near future we will know about that.
You can't do the practical lab work online but you can prepare students for the work by offering online films about lab safety, demonstrations of procedures and equipment and so on. There are many examples of virtual labs around the world where you can simulate experiments and see the results, very useful with dangerous procedures that are hard to do in real life. Simulations enable students to try different and even dangerous scenarios in complete safety. There are so many possibilities today!
